APARIGRAHA – CLASS REFLECTION & JOURNALING PROMPT

Hello, hoping you’re well and safe. This past weekend I led a chair practice that focused on the last of the five yamas.

5. Aparigraha: Non-Possessiveness

“Pari” means around and “graha’ means to grasp. Aparigraha means non-grasping of things around you. When expectations are high we become greedy and once this is allowed to grow it’s even more difficult to rid ourselves it. It’s as though we’re never satisfied, grasping at things and ideas.

Yoga Sutra 2.39: One who overcomes possessiveness and a grasping mind, will gain knowledge of the past, present and future.

Journaling Prompt: Explore the concept of “enough.” Take part in pleasurable things without doing it in excess. What do you truly need in life, what is considered “enough and sacred”?

The principles of yama remind us that we are not only individual beings but also social beings, understanding how to behave with ourselves and with others.

Take good care,
Natasha
